Backup\\\'s added value is zero, or even negative because backing up requires resources (disks, tapes, maintenance, electrical energy,...), so it represents an expense. Can the value of the backup be increased to the levels to make it profitable?
Classical backup is a real estate. There is nothing we can do with it. If we want to verify it, a test system has to be set-up and data has to be restored which requires time and other resources.
Is it possible to do a backup so it would be useful? Can we simply restore a table from a backup? Can it be used to display old data?
What if we want to do an ad-hoc test? Can a backup be used in Read-Write mode? Does this render backups unusable?
You will be shown how to make a backup that can be quickly used and thus increasing its value.
This presentation will be interesting for leaders, who always strive to reduce costs, DBAs that a are always short on time and programmers, because they like to develop using production data.

Boris Oblak, author
Boris Oblak, the head of research at Abakus plus d.o.o., is in charge of the IT research department since 1992.He graduated in 1987 from Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at University of Maribor. He started working with Oracle database at version 5.He and his colleague were successful in porting Oracle database 7.1.5 to linux in 1996. At the time Oracle had not yet supported the operating system. With version 8 linux became an officially supported platform for the Oracle database. Since then Oracle uses linux as their primary development platform and focused their efforts into administration and optimization of their database.Boris is also a co-author of the Flight Information System application that is used at the „Jože Pučnik Airport“, which is the biggest airport in Slovenia. He is the main author of the Arbiter, which is an application for audit trail management. In the year 2004 he became Oracle Certified Professional DBA.
